Self-Guided Study

Studies in the Twelve Core Competencies is a self-guided learning course with short, informational study focuses on the skills clergy and other pastoral caregivers need in providing ministry to persons and families living with a substance misuse problem or addiction.

Each of the twelve studies guides the reader in learning about the competency area, gives needed information and highlights important considerations toward an understanding of the issues involved, lists views to consider, and then suggests homework. A bibliography is also provided at the end of each competency topic. Also, a diverse list of research, treatment, recovery advocacy and other resource organizations (with addresses, phone numbers and websites) is included without cost at the end of the course. This is followed by a brief list of other useful websites relevant to children, adolescents and college students.

Studies in the Twelve Core Competencies is printed in an 8½ x 11-inch format and plastic spiral bound, with a durable, labeled cover.

About the Course Writer

Excerpt from Studies in the Twelve Core Competencies:

"Addiction disease is a disorder of advancing disorders, beginning with...
...the flexible accommodation of the brain to the effects of a chemical,
...moving to the mind and distortions in thinking about the use,
...to attitude and behavior which slip out of line with healthy values,
...to the body and mounting drug damage including the brain's adaptation,
...to emotional life that constricts and becomes exaggerated,
...to the spirit of the person and spiritual life which slowly weakens."

"What family members slowly and painfully come to understand is that addiction disease defies almost everything, including trust, a sense of reason, common sense, values and faith beliefs, threat of relationship loss, legal pressure, and love. When the spouse and family try everything and nothing seems to work, they are confronted with a question: If loving doesn't work, what do we have left to help with?"
